HOW TO PLAY
In Tug of War, two teams pull on opposite ends of a rope, aiming to drag the opposing team across a designated center line. The game is governed by specific rules regarding rope setup, team composition, conduct during the pull, and how to determine a winner.
Rope and Setup:
A strong, thick rope is used, marked with a center line and two additional marks 13 feet to either side.
The center line of the rope must be aligned with a center line marked on the ground.
Teams line up on either side of the center line, with the rope passing under their arms.
Team Composition:
Teams usually consist of eight people, but the number can vary by competition.
There may be weight restrictions for each division.
All team members must be on their feet, and the anchor (last person) can touch the ground with one hand.
During the Pull:
The referee gives commands like "Pick up the rope," "Take the strain," and "Pull" to start the game.
Teams pull with their arms and bodies, using their legs for leverage.
No sudden dropping of the rope or "heaving" is allowed.
No locking of the rope around the body or tying it to a person is allowed.
If a team member falls, it may result in a caution or disqualification, depending on the rules.
Determining the Winner:
The goal is to pull the opposing team's mark on the rope past the center line or cause them to cross it completely.
Often, matches are best of three pulls, with teams switching ends after each pull.
The team that successfully pulls the opposing team's mark over the center line wins the pull.
